The Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden

The Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden

Located at 1467 Highway 15 in Kingston, Ontario, the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden was established in 2021 and is an Indigenous-led expression of community resilience. For three growing seasons, more than 600 volunteers have cultivated vegetable gardens, planted and harvested medicines, established a pollinator garden, and planted over 1000 native species of trees and shrubs in this community space.

At the garden, Indigenous community members engage in personal Asemma (Sacred Tobacco) ceremony and explore a collective “remembering” of our fundamental relationship with Shkakmigkwe (Mother Earth) as a beloved relative. Relationship with land supports individual and community cultural well-being and resilience, is necessary for Indigenous food sovereignty,  and enables tangible climate action.
